5 things every “Back-to-Schooler” should know!

GRRR!  It’s that time already! Some of us are scrambling for back to school items..hitting the Target Dollar Spot at pivotal restocking times to feed our stationery obsession.   Some of us have already made that transition from summer to school, right now as we speak.  Eventually as summer fades, fall will enter and kid free days will be endless…well until fall break!?!  But as our back-to-schoolers get hyped about going back, there’s 5 simple things they gotta know-

1.-School’s not that serious! Wait mom……before you stone me, deep breaths! Yeah its important, but not that serious. Students-don’t get overwhelmed with all the assignments, projects, gossip, trends, blah, blah, blah.  Take it in small chunks, plan your days, be consistent, and expect to be successful.  Trust me, I’m a teacher, it works.

2.-Having a boyfriend or girlfriend during the school year is a great idea! Again parents hear me out!  Positive relationships during our formative years lay the ground work for our future.  Going “steady” at the appropriate age and time can add value and provide avenues for personal growth.  Students-we are giving you an opportunity to make healthy decisions during this process…if we see that you’re not…you’re done!

3.-Social Media A Must!-If any parents are still listening….allow your student to snap chat, instagram, periscope, face-time. etc.  We live in a technology driven society and not being tech savvy now-a-days is a disservice.  But parents you must monitor the usage and set ground rules and cut off times for social media.  In my house, the dinner table is a tech-free zone, and all devices are off, shut down, and in a central location by 8pm.  Parents be firm, consistent, and let your student know that if they violate the terms……they loose the device.

4.-Be Sure to Study Last Minute-I know I’ve lost all of you on this one!  But studys show that students who study right before bed time and the morning of the test do better!  So cram on!  Well….don’t try to cram the entire chapter into one night of studying!  That never works!

5.-Always Pray-Hey I know school life can be difficult and uninspiring- thats all the more reason to speak to God about it.  He knows everything about you and can help in all situations, if you pray and invite him into your life, He will show up on your behalf.  With out a doubt…I promise He’ll be there.

So Happy Back to School Yall!

Is working from home really working from home?!

Heck yeah!  Let’s just get that out-of-the-way.  For all of you who think that working from home isn’t really “working”…sorry, it is!  Working from home is a blessing for some and not so much for others.  I’ve been blessed to work from home for the past 6 years and it was an adjustment, since I’m a chatty chatster who takes pleasure in chatting it up with the coworker-homies.  But working from the confines of your home is just as much a REAL JOB as it is working offsite.  The key to working from home is planning, balance, boundaries, and patience.

Planning-is my fav!  Planning for me is artwork in a binder.  I didn’t see myself as artsy or crafty until I began keeping a lifeplanner to organize.  Planning is key if you want to be a home based success.  Pen to pad lists have been proven to increase memory and save a frazzled mom a time or two!  (All in favor say Aye!)  Whether spiral or binder form, get a planner, write your crap down, and get organized.

Balance-BIG SIGH!  There really isn’t a magic bullet for this one, it’s just something we’ve got to achieve. When we’re out of balance it’s unhealthy for us and the people around us.  It causes stress, burn-out, anger, sadness, depression….it sux.  So balance comes from a place of realistically looking at your life, one chunk at a time, getting things done, in small batches, day by day, piece by piece.  Work-Life balance has to be implemented if you work from home.  Since home IS the workplace, lines are easily blurred if there is no balance.  Having a specific area to work in, a specific time to report to, and a specific schedule to adhere to, helps.

Boundaries-Kinda goes along with balance.  But set clear concise boundaries for yourself and for your family to follow.  If your “work” hours are from 7am-3pm Monday-Friday with a 30 minute break, post it so that expectation can be set.  Be sure that you adhere to those set boundaries as much as possible,.  If you don’t take it seriously…others won’t either.  Finally never put work before the family.  If you have a good daily plan or schedule, work hard to complete your tasks, and save the rest for another day.  Never work late just to clear you list….remember family first!

Patience-Be ginger with yourself.  I didn’t become a work from home genius in one day!  It took me about 2 years to get myself and the family acclimated to what my goals and expectations.  Over the years, these have changed, so I’ve had to renew the process several times.  Six years later, I think we have a rhythm that works well.  But I had to be patient with the process, and to pray when I was overwhelmed.

So let’s recap-working from home is most definitely work.  It takes planning, balance, boundaries, patience…….

and PRAYER-

Dear God-bless all of us who are fortunate enough to work from home.  Even if it’s not a fortunate situation, we count it all joy in your name.  Help us to keep you first in all that we do, to be good stewards of our time and energies, to have healthy work-life balance, to keep clear boundaries, and to have patience when we do all we know to do and things still seem to go wrong.  We depend on your love for guidance, comfort, and peace.  Thank for all things!  In the name of Jesus we pray-Amen

WoW Wednesday- Fill me up

Food!  Who doesn’t like to eat food?  Well I’m sure some people may have food struggles but I’m a foodie!  I’m the type that takes pleasure in eating not preparing.  Cooking doesn’t bring me joy until the end when it’s time to eat.  Being a Southerner, comfort food and down home cooking is how we get down everyday!  I’m a meat and potatoes kinda gal.  But mostly potatoes!  I can eat some form of potato everyday-french fries, hash browns, mashed, baked, scalloped, souffle’ its heaven.  Then when we add the cheese, the sour cream, the ranch dressing, the bacon, the butter……I mean come on, it’s HEAVEN. I just sit there and act like I have no control over my hand and allow it to shovel that yummy-ness into my mouth until I’m full!  It’s bad…I know!  But what if we did that with the Father?  What if we sat down and gave him full control of our lives and allowed Him to shovel His goodness inside of us..what would happen?  Does He even desire to do that? He does!  Psalm 81:10-New Living Translation-For it was I, the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it with good things! UmmmK.  Being a food freak-when I first read that scripture I thought about food…”open your mouth wide and I will feel it with good things”, screams food to me.  But once I got past the flesh, I realized that God wants to fill us with his goodness.  He wants to physically feed us of course, but more importantly He wants to satisfy us spiritually.  And He wants to do it to the fullest!  Open your mouth wide He says!  Because what He has for us is so great and mighty, you gotta be ready to receive it!  Also at the beginning of the passage, He reminds us that He is the God that rescued His people from Egypt.  So that tells me that He is reminding us of who He is.  No problem, trial, bill, or desperate situation can negate who God is!  Hallelujah!  He has always been bigger than our situations, its up to us to remember!
So for this Women of Wisdom Wednesday, get full!  Don’t cut back the word of God, take a full plate and dine on its goodness.  Open your mouth wide, and fill it with good things.

Clogger- Blogger – Flogger

If you follow me on Instagram (@bbprep) you’re hip to my hashtags!

#flogger # clogger #faithblog # christianblog

But many still ask what is a flogger?  And if I’m a clogger, they never see me dancing in wooden shoes!!!! LOL

The term “flog” or “clog” for me refers to my faith or christian blog.  So I am both a FLOGGER and CLOGGER.  BBPREP is a lifestyle blog that focuses on…….life.  But a life that includes Christ.  For me being a Christian is a lifestyle, not just a cliche’. So I can’t talk about mascara without talking about God.  Or discuss planning without including Christ.

I live in the South and down here-we talk about being a Christian like we talk about sweet tea; ITS ALWAYS ON THE MENU! But it seems that over the years, we’ve lost what Christianity means.  Its now a tagline not a conviction.  We wear t shirts that say GOD OVER EVERYTHING but embarrassed to say our blessing over dinner, in a public restaurant.  My husband sums it up-“being a Christian should mean that you are in an intimate relationship with God, not just dating Him”.  So where did we loose our way? How did #Christianity become trendy and not classic…the next big thing and not the only thing?

I contend that it’s my fault.  I can’t blame society or the church with out blaming myself.  I can’t expect others to share Christ if I’m not bold enough to share Him.   So YES I AM A CLOGGER BLOGGER FLOGGER!

But most importantly a child of the King.  Romans 10:9-10 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

Planner Joy!

For planner girls(or guys??) the hottest thing going is your actual PLANNER!  Whether you are a FiloFax Phenom, Condren Crazy, or Midori Maven, we love our planners!  Since we like to combine styles and function, ie the Kiki Condren or Kate Dori, naming all of them would be nearly impossible.  I’m a lifelong planner, but about 6 months ago I kicked it up a notch!  Using my beloved washi, duct tape, page flags, and post-it notes, weekly planning got REAL!  Real what?- really fun, really serious, really relaxing, really creative, really joyful.

 IMG_0452

Looking at my current week (above), you see I have a lot going on.  Between being a wife, mom, educator, entrepreneur……it’s madness!  So writing things down is a must.  I’m a list gal, post-it note freak!  Visual reminder must haves!  So what makes me happy, what gives me planner joy?!- viewing my to-do list  and appointments on well decorated pages.  AHHHHHHH! I feel calm just thinking about it!  We all love it. Our instagam accounts can attest to that!  Hashtags like, #weeklyplan, #planwithme, #plannerglam, # plannerlove, #poshplanner, #plannerlife, followed by the “pic of the day”, all testify that connecting with others who share your weird addition is the icing on the cake, a feeling of great pleasure and happiness-joy!

Daily, when I reach for my planner, not only am I reminded of what’s ahead for the week, I’m reminded of Romans 15:13-“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”  Our lives can be full of lists, to-do’s, reminders, appointments, and a bunch of nonsense!  But God desires to fill it with hope, joy, and peace as we trust him.  Trust him daily with your stuff, and watch him plan the best day ever.

So forge ahead my planner addicts, creating those daily works of art!

Wishing you planner joy.

WoW Wednesday

For this Women of Wisdom Wednesday our topic is integrity.  We all know what integrity means; “doing what’s right when no one is looking, having strong moral character and uprightness, not being afraid of doing what’s right, even if you’re the only one doing it…….all the things our mothers taught us during our youth.
Now that we’ve had several chances to walk the walk, what does integrity mean to us today?  Does integrity mean walking what seems like a mile to return your Target shopping cart?  Returning the cash that a stranger dropped right at your feet?  Informing your neighbor that your kid hit their mailbox when they stole the car!? (YIKES)
Today it seems integrity is a lost art.  The nightly news proves it’s been replaced by corruption, selfishness, and pride.  However at the end of the broadcast, “the person of the week”, may show a glimmer of hope.  Someone who has stepped outside of themselves to be a helper, a supported, a friend, a person of integrity.  But is that it?  Is that all we get?  One person per week that has gone over and beyond to rescue a kitten from a tree?  No offense but there has to be more of us who want to honor God by living a life of integrity.  Proverbs 28:18 (ESV)-“Whoever walks in integrity will be delivered, but he who is crooked in his ways will suddenly fall.  God’s plan for us is to be delivered.  He sent Jesus for that reason.  To deliver us from our sins and to give us hope and a great end!
So be your own “person on the week”!  Be the one who does what’s right when everyone is looking and when it’s only you. Instead of saving half the cake for yourself, send a couple of slices next door! (that’s for me)
Be WoW!
